Sanae Takaichi, a staunch conservative, has been elected Prime Minister of Japan, becoming the country's first female leader. She won a decisive vote in the lower house of parliament. This event is not only historic from a gender perspective but also marks a significant rightward shift in the country's political course.
Takaichi, an ally of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and an admirer of the policies of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, received 237 votes in the 465-seat lower house of parliament. Her victory breaks the so-called "glass ceiling" in a country where men still hold an overwhelming dominance in politics and government. Takaichi is expected to be officially confirmed by the upper house of parliament as well and sworn in as Japan's 104th prime minister on Tuesday evening. She will replace the current leader, Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned last month, taking responsibility for the party's losses in the elections.
However, analysts note that Takaichi's election is unlikely to be seen as a sign of progressive change. On the contrary, it symbolizes the adoption of a tougher policy on immigration and other social issues. After years of economic stagnation (deflation), Japan is now facing rising prices, which has raised a wave of public discontent and increased support for the opposition, including the far-right "Sanseito" party.
The need for a new alliance arose after the coalition between the LDP and its partner of about 26 years, the "Komeito" party, broke down, leading to serious changes in the Japanese political landscape. The LDP, having lost its parliamentary majority, was forced to seek a new ally to form a government. The "Innovation Party" agreed to support Takaichi's candidacy without demanding ministerial portfolios.
64-year-old Sanae Takaichi is known in Japanese politics for her staunch conservative views and is considered a protégé of the assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and a follower of his political line. She promises to revive the economic strategy known as "Abenomics," which involves aggressive monetary policy, economic stimulus, and structural reforms.
In foreign policy and security matters, Takaichi has adopted a "hawkish" stance. She advocates for a significant increase in defense spending and a revision of Japan's pacifist constitution, adopted after World War II. In social matters, Takaichi also adheres to conservative values, opposing the legalization of same-sex marriage and the possibility for married couples to have different surnames.
Despite her decisive stance, Takaichi's government will face serious challenges. These include slow economic growth, rising inflation, and geopolitical tensions with China and North Korea. The new coalition is seen as a "coalition of convenience," and its stability has yet to be tested, as the parties have different approaches to a number of key issues. Takaichi's election will be a historic step for gender equality in Japan, but the challenges she faces will require great political skill and flexibility.
